Google Spreadsheets - Review

by Jason on June 7th, 2006

That didn’t take long. Just got the invite to try-out the Google Spreadsheets. In standard Google fashion, it’s a lesson in simple, clean design.

The overall functionality is what you would expect from your basic spreadsheet program: formulas, sorting, merging of cells, formatting, etc.

I would say everything an entry-level user of Excel would need, could be done via Google Spreadsheets.

Robert Scoble has some good comments about this being good for Microsoft (competition in the market improves the software to the end-user) and that middleware will eventually be the key. I’m just not so sure an additional layer will enable the mass of users to be large enough to really impact or change Microsoft’s Excel strategy dramatically.
